The itinerary will take you through a Kigali City Tour and a countryside journey to Rwanda, after which you get an adventure in Nyungwe Forest National Park. The main attraction on this Rwanda safari is the exploration of Nyungwe Forest through chimpanzee tracking and canopy walkways.

Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of the most amazing natural attractions in Rwanda that offer visitors chimpanzee trekking, primates viewing, bird watching and hiking. This forest features a canopy walk that gives a different perspective above the rainforest.

Our 4 Day Rwanda Safari to Nyungwe is perfect for couples, families, individual travellers and groups of visitors new to Rwanda.

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – Kigali City Tour – Drive to Nyungwe Region

This safari starts with pickup from Kigali International Airport or your hotel by our professional safari guide.

Depending on your arrival time, we begin with the brief Kigali city tour, giving you a chance to explore the clean and lively capital of Rwanda, and then drive southwards.

Your city tour may include visiting selected sites in the city like the Kigali Genocide Memorial, markets, craft centres and others depending on your arrival time and interests.

After your city tour, we begin the wonderful drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park.

As you travel through Rwanda’s famed land of a thousand hills, you’ll enjoy different landscapes, green rolling hills, cultivated countryside and rural communities. Your journey itself becomes one of the experiences of the trip as you move from the urban setting of Kigali to the ancient rainforest of Nyungwe.

We will make suitable stops along the way for refreshments, photographs and lunch.

Then continue towards the Nyungwe forest area and reach your selected accommodation in the late afternoon/evening.

Check-in, relax and enjoy dinner as you prepare for the following day’s chimpanzee trekking adventure.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest – Forest Exploration

Wake up early for breakfast before proceeding to the designated starting point for your chimpanzee trekking experience.

Chimpanzee trekking is one of the best experiences in Nyungwe. After a brief visit by the park management, you will be guided into the forest by skilled guides and trackers in search of habituated chimpanzees.

The trek takes you deep into the rainforest, where you will experience the sights and sounds of one of Africa’s remarkable forest ecosystems.

As you look for chimpanzees, keep an eye out of other primates, birds, butterflies, and different vegetation found in the Nyungwe Forest.

The chimpanzee tracking does not always guarantee sighting of chimps, as they move freely in the forest. However, the experienced trackers try to find the communities of chimps. An early morning rise is encouraged by official Rwanda tour itineraries for chimpanzee tracking.

After completing the trek, return to your accommodation for lunch and time to relax.

In the afternoon, based on your energy and selected package, you can choose an additional forest experience. Options may include a nature hike, birding or another one of the forest trails available.

Nyungwe Forest has numerous hiking trails which give you the opportunity to experience the forest waterfalls, scenery, wildlife, among others.

Day 3: Nyungwe Canopy Walk – Tea Experience – Scenic Exploration

On waking up to the morning light, prepare for another exciting day in the Nyungwe Rainforest.

For today’s excursion, you will have the opportunity to visit one of the park’s major landmarks, which is the Nyungwe Canopy Walkway.

Your guide will take you to the starting point of the canopy walk before you proceed with the guided walk through the forest towards the suspension bridge.

Nyungwe Canopy Walkway is elevated above the ground level of the forest and allows visitors to get spectacular views of the rainforest canopy and the neighbouring hills. On the trail and during the walk above the tree tops, you may see various birds, butterflies and primates from a totally new angle.

After the canopy walk, return for lunch.

In the afternoon, continue exploring the Nyungwe area with an optional tea plantation. You can learn about tea production and admire the interesting combination of organized tea plantations and the wild rainforest landscape.

Alternatively, visitors interested in hiking have the option of taking another path through the forest. Nyungwe has a number of hiking trails that include paths to waterfalls, viewpoints, and places where one can see birds and primates.
