Detailed itinerary
You will start the safari with an early morning pickup by a Chopper Tour and Travel company representative driver guide from a hotel in Kigali Airport at around 3 am, and the journey will take about 5 to 6 hours by car from Kigali to Nyungwe. You will arrive at Nyungwe Forest National Park by 8:00 AM, where you will be greeted by your guide and a park ranger. Before heading out on your trek, you will receive a briefing on safety guidelines, trekking etiquette and the behaviours of the chimpanzees.
The guide will equip you with all the necessary chimpanzee trekking gear, including hiking boots and a walking stick. The trek begins at 9:00 AM, and you will head into the forest. Nyungwe is a haven for over 300 species of birds and several species of primates, including colobus monkeys and the famous chimpanzees. You will take about 30 minutes to 4 hours searching for the chimpanzees. While searching for the chimpanzees, you will come across several primates, such as the blue monkeys, baboons, colobus monkeys and many more.
After several hours of trekking, you will spot the chimpanzees and spend only one hour with them. You will witness them feed, play, groom, associate with each other and much more. You will take pictures of them. After spending time with the chimpanzees, you will continue your trek back toward the park’s entrance. Upon returning to the park’s entrance, you will be offered a light refreshment and lunch.

After having lunch, you will engage in a Nyungwe canopy walk that will last for about 2 hours. You will have the canopy walk at the suspended bridge, offering you views of birds, primates and many more. You will then head back to the park entrance, where you will set off to head back to Kigali. You will be dropped off at a hotel upon arrival.
That will be the end of the 1 day Nyungwe chimp trekking safari.
